American Patriotism

John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a poem about a real woman named Barbara Frietchie, who was 90 years old when Stonewall Jackson’s army marched into the town of Frederick. The story is speculated whether true or not, but Barbara was well known patriot who loved her country. This poem pay honor to her. I think about it many times when I see a flag (regardless of the month) and remember the first time I heard it –given by my father –It holds special memories and feeling for me, and I wanted to share it.

Barbara Frietchie
by John Greenleaf Whittier

Up from the meadows rich with corn,
Clear in the cool September morn,
The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.

Round about them orchards sweep,
Apple- and peach-tree fruited deep,
Fair as a garden of the Lord
To the eyes of the famished rebel horde,

On that pleasant morn of the early fall
When Lee marched over the mountain wall,—
Over the mountains winding down,
Horse and foot, into Frederick town.

Forty flags with their silver stars,
Forty flags with their crimson bars,
Flapped in the morning wind: the sun
Of noon looked down, and saw not one.

Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,
Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;
Bravest of all in Frederick town,
She took up the flag the men hauled down;

In her attic window the staff she set,
To show that one heart was loyal yet.
Up the street came the rebel tread,
Stonewall Jackson riding ahead.

Under his slouched hat left and right
He glanced: the old flag met his sight.
“Halt!”— the dust-brown ranks stood fast.
“Fire!”— out blazed the rifle-blast.

It shivered the window, pane and sash;
It rent the banner with seam and gash.
Quick, as it fell, from the broken staff
Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarf;

She leaned far out on the window-sill,
And shook it forth with a royal will.
“Shoot, if you must, this old gray head,
But spare your country’s flag,” she said.

A shade of sadness, a blush of shame,
Over the face of the leader came;
The nobler nature within him stirred
To life at that woman’s deed and word:

“Who touches a hair of yon gray head
Dies like a dog! March on!” he said.
All day long through Frederick street
Sounded the tread of marching feet:

All day long that free flag tost
Over the heads of the rebel host.
Ever its torn folds rose and fell
On the loyal winds that loved it well;

And through the hill-gaps sunset light
Shone over it with a warm good-night.
Barbara Frietchie’s work is o’er,
And the Rebel rides on his raids no more.

Honor to her! and let a tear
Fall, for her sake, on Stonewall’s bier.
Over Barbara Frietchie’s grave
Flag of Freedom and Union, wave!

Peace and order and beauty draw
Round thy symbol of light and law;
And ever the stars above look down
On thy stars below in Frederick town!

Our New Arrival

INTRODUCING: Scott Ivan Ong
Born: March 8,2010 9:32pm

After 16 hours of labor -My doctor (Dr Klomp) said we needed to have an emergency C section -Our baby was facing the wrong way and wasn't making any progress. I was scared to death... my only comfort was that I knew I was in good hands (I have an incredible doctor -one I would recommend to every woman), and that hundreds of women have C sections all the time... and most importantly- Zack was with me to hold my hand.

Look at the size of our baby! :) 8lbs 14oz and 21 1/2 inches long :)

Drum Roll Please!

We had our ultrasound on Friday morning and decided we wanted to find out what we were having......

We are having another boy! :-) We honestly are very excited about having another little boy -first because we already have clothes and toy for boys, and Logan will have a little playmate :-) that and I'm seriously worried that I would be a terrible mom to a little girl... I have no idea how to do little girls hair...and I don't know if I'd dress her up cute and put together... (at least not like a little boy) and I know... I know that that comes with experience and time, but the thought actually scared me. The only thing that was disappointing was that Zack and I had a girls name picked out. We honestly haven't been able to come up with a boys name AT ALL... so I guess since we have some time we're still ok -and we'll let you know when we do.

In a Nutshell

Ok so after a few months of no internet at my house we finally got it again (we were having an argument with the phone company who said that if the internet connection problem was from inside the house we would have to pay for it to be fixed, even if we didn't do it) so after a long story short.... we went with CableOne -so far so good. :)

Ok quick update on our life -the most exciting news is that we are expecting! My due date is March 7 -and we find out in a couple of weeks what we are having. :) I just haven't ever been able to wait too long -at least not yet -maybe if I had a boy and a girl then I just might consider baby #3 to be a surprise... we'll see when that time comes... :D But for now we have decided that we want to find out. :) I'm sure we'll post.

Another crazy part of my life is being called into the Primary Presidency. I am now the 2nd coucilor and it has been so much fun -I think that Primary is one of the best callings I've ever had. Right now though it's been a bit crazy with trying to get the primary program ready and still being new to everything. :) I have to admit it will be a little nicer when the program is done.... but for now... :)

Next week I'm going to run/walk in the St. Luke's womens celebration 5K -maybe I will be able to post some pics....

Anyway -that's about it for now. In a nutshell.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOGAN!

I can't believe that Logan is now two -it just doesn't seem possible. Two years just isn't suppose to go by THAT fast. I look at him, and he just doesn't seem to be that "baby" anymore.

Today we had a lot of fun, we woke up and had "gwapes" and bagles for breakfast-it's what he wanted. :) and then gave Logie a hair cut -and suprisingly it was the easiest hair cut I've ever had with him -usually we end up both covered in hair and him so upset that he's difficult the rest of the day -I gave him a cookie to eat while I cut his hair and I think that's our new trick! YAY!

Then we went to the store and bought an Easter Sunday outfit -something he can match daddy in. I have to confess something awful -I only had Logan's 4 month old pictures taken -other than that -it's just been snapshopts... and nothing prepared.... So I'm determined to have a family photo taken and also Logan's two year old pictures taken. -I'll make sure to post them.

We also bought a birthday present for Logan's little friend -Brogan (his birthday is also today -he turned three) -Logan picked it out -it was a kite with Lightning McQueen (Cars) on it -hopefully it's something Brogan likes...after Logan helped me wrap it we went over to Brogan's birthday party -it was a pirate theme -and really cute! They had to walk the plank, and pin the treasure on the map, the cake was cupcakes shaped in the form of an island with a pirate on it -Logan loved the blue frosting (ocean) and was stained blue the rest of the day. :) -then they (all the kiddies) had a fun time trying to hit the Pirate Ship pinata -it was so funny.... none of them had the strength to break it, so in the end my friend Gina (Brogan's mommy) had to break it open for them....and the treasure -really was a treasure! chocolate gold coins, silver mint paddys, etc...! Gina you did an awesome job!

-Tonight we are having a little family birthday party -nothing really big -we're having all our families over for a real birthday party tomorrow. I'll make sure to post pics and everything.

I'm just so very humbled to be able to enjoy my sweet little boy -he truly has been a blessing in my life, he has made me laugh and smile more than anything else. I can't help but think that if someone had told me what joy he would bring into my life - I know I would have agree with them -but I probably wouldn't have felt the same way I do now. Out of all the things I have accomplished in my life, of all the fun experiences and good times I've enjoyed -nothing comes even close to the joy of being a mother. I feel so blessed -and am so grateful to my Heavenly Father for giving me this overwhelming opportunity. I love you Logan. Happy Birthday.

It's lunch time!

I just went into the kitchen after being on the phone with our insurance company, to find Logan sitting in the middle of the floor (with the fridge door open) a large tub of cottage cheese between his legs and a large spoon he got from the dishwasher -thankfully they were clean. :) three sticks of string cheese, and a carton of orange juice! I wish my camera worked! It was so funny! :)
